Birds3D | v1.0
Birds3D is a Nuke toolset for creating flocks of 3D birds.
Birds3D is comprised of bird gizmos, and particle templates to plug them into.
Each bird has customizable attributes including flap speed, range and randomness.
Currently, Birds3D includes 5 birds: | And 3 templates: |

Installation:
Copy the Birds3D folder to your ~/.nuke directory, and add the following to your init.py:
nuke.pluginAddPath('./Birds3D')
Once installed, you can add birds and templates from the left side node menu
Tested on Nuke12.2v2 on Windows, but should work on other versions and OS's.

I'm beginning to wonder whether this is simply a limitation of Nuke's particle system, we might be trying to do too much with it!
Possibly a particle expression to limit rotational speed or angles to more sensible values, maybe a heavy rotational drag? It's definitely one of the biggest issues with the tool right now..
