Birds3D | v1.0

Birds3D is a Nuke toolset for creating flocks of 3D birds.

Birds3D is comprised of bird gizmos, and particle templates to plug them into.

Each bird has customizable attributes including flap speed, range and randomness.

Birds3D Properties

Currently, Birds3D includes 5 birds: And 3 templates:
  • Wood Pigeon
  • Crow
  • Seagull
  • Scarlet Macaw
  • Blue & Gold Macaw
  • Large Random Flock
  • Murmuration
  • Circling

Installation:

Copy the Birds3D folder to your ~/.nuke directory, and add the following to your init.py:

nuke.pluginAddPath('./Birds3D')

Once installed, you can add birds and templates from the left side node menu

Tested on Nuke12.2v2 on Windows, but should work on other versions and OS's.

I've been trying to make my own version of this for years, and this is the best implementation I've found yet. However, it still suffers from a problem I've never been able to fix - euler flipping. As the birds round a corner they sometimes flip along their roll axis (presumably somewhere within the ParticleMotionA lign there is a rotational value that is increasing above 360 and therefor looping back round to 0). Have you any ideas on how to prevent this?

Thank you Rich!

I'm beginning to wonder whether this is simply a limitation of Nuke's particle system, we might be trying to do too much with it!

Possibly a particle expression to limit rotational speed or angles to more sensible values, maybe a heavy rotational drag? It's definitely one of the biggest issues with the tool right now..
