Generate a mathematically accurate and replicable depth haze/fog based on a depth map.

DepthToHaze allows the user to create a depth haze/fog at a density of their choice. It is based on merge 'over' math, which leads to a couple of advantages over a linear operation like whitepoint/blackpoint:

  • It ramps non-linearly in depth, simulating the merging of multiple layers of fog over each other, which is more physically accurate than a linearly ramping fog;
  • It can be copied and pasted to shots with vastly different depth ranges from the master shot, where normally this would break a blackpoint-whitepoint operation if the depth range of the new shot is outside the whitepoint-blackpoint settings of the initial shot;
  • It allows for a more intuitive control of the haze via adjusting its density in density per depth unit, rather than arbitrarily increasing or decreasing the haze effect with a grade.

My hope is that this tool can reduce the amount of time compers spend setting up depth haze/fog and help maintain continuity in sequences of shots with varying depth ranges. Enjoy!
