As you see in the Picture above..
You can Choose an operation for what you want to do from the menu in the top.
then open the arrow of the operation you selected and start removing.
If selected 'matte fill' you will have to connect a matte for whatever you want to remove into the matte pipe of the gizmo.
So easy and effective by just one sensitive slider.
