AutoRead is a lightweight workflow plugin for Foundry Nuke that automatically creates or updates Read nodes whenever a Write node successfully finishes rendering.
Instead of manually navigating to the rendered sequence, creating a Read node, setting frame ranges and reconnecting the Viewer, AutoRead handles the repetitive work automatically so you can stay focused on compositing.
Unlike many simple AutoRead scripts, AutoRead validates that rendered frames actually exist before creating a Read node. This prevents broken Reads being generated after cancelled or incomplete renders and ensures frame ranges always reflect the files present on disk.
Features
Automatic Read creation after successful renders
Automatic frame range detection from rendered files
Smart positioning beneath the originating Write node
Intelligent Read naming based on the Write node
Automatic updating of existing Read nodes
Duplicate prevention using hidden internal metadata
Optional Viewer connection
Professional green tile colour for generated Reads
Graceful handling of cancelled renders and invalid paths
Modular architecture designed for future expansion
AutoRead Controls
Each Write node includes its own AutoRead settings panel.
Enable AutoRead
Master switch for the plugin on that specific Write node.
When disabled, AutoRead ignores that Write during rendering.
Auto Position
Places newly created Read nodes neatly beneath the originating Write node using consistent spacing.
Disable this if you prefer to position Read nodes manually.
Update Existing Read
If AutoRead has already generated a Read for this Write node, it updates the existing Read instead of creating another one.
This keeps node graphs clean while refreshing:
File path
Frame range
Sequence information
Auto Frame Range
Automatically scans the rendered sequence on disk and sets:
First
Last
Original First
Original Last
using the frames that actually exist.
Green Tile Colour
Applies AutoRead's professional green tile colour to generated Read nodes, making automatically managed nodes easy to identify.
Connect Viewer
Automatically connects the Viewer to the generated Read after rendering for immediate playback and review.
Current Limitations
Version 1.0.0 currently supports standard image sequence formats such as EXR, PNG, TIFF and JPEG.
Movie files (.mov) are not yet supported but are planned for a future release.
The plugin has currently been developed and tested on Windows using Nuke 17.
Future Development
AutoRead has been built with a modular architecture to support future workflow tools, including:
Auto Version Up
Auto Publish
Render Notifications
Render History
Compare Previous Versions
Auto Contact Sheets
Auto Backdrops
These features are planned for future releases while keeping the plugin lightweight and easy to maintain.
Feedback & Bug Reports
AutoRead is actively maintained, and feedback is always appreciated.
If you encounter any bugs, unexpected behaviour, or have suggestions for new features, please get in touch. User feedback helps improve future releases and ensures the plugin remains reliable for production workflows.
